A Slice of Pai

Pai, Thailand

Guest Blog Post by Caroline Daly

Picture yourself in the lush Thai mountains, hidden away from the regular tourist route.  Sound good?  Then Pai, Thailand should be next on your list of must-see places.

Located just four hours by mini bus from Chiang Mai, Pai is a small hippie town that boasts beautiful views, winding roads, and an overall relaxed atmosphere.  No one is in a hurry in Pai, particularly the backpackers who plan to stay two days and end up staying two weeks.  It's just one of those addictive places that welcomes you in and makes it difficult to leave.

As if the town wasn't enough, you can stay at an actual circus school.  The aptly named, Circus Hostel, is located on a hill overlooking the city.  It's the perfect place for both the novice and the experienced to hone their skills.  For 600 baht ($20), the hostel even offers unlimited circus classes.  So if you want to be able to say you juggled fire in Thailand, this is the place for you.  You can even show off your newfound talents at the weekly performances.  If you're not in the mood to run away and join the circus, you can always just spend your days relaxing poolside and your nights enjoying a beer around the campfire.

Another of Pai's many wonders is the food market.  Every night is a street foodie's paradise.  Aside from the normal, yet underrated, Pad Thai, is everything from burgers to pancakes to open faced sandwiches.  No matter what you're craving, you will not go hungry in Pai.

Pai is a bit of a vacation from a vacation.  It offers great food, hours of relaxation, and mountain roads that are just begging to be explored via motorbike.  While traveling, it's all too easy to get burned out on big cities so an escape is always welcome.  Do yourself a favor and next time you find yourself in Thailand, make sure you get a slice of Pai.
