5 Ways to Save Your Money for Travel

Posted by

We all have at least a dozen countries we're dying to visit.  Why not make it happen?

1. Make a list

As dreadful as it may sound, prioritizing your goals is the first step to getting yourself onto that plane.  Whether it's on your iPad or an old-fashioned paper list, create a spreadsheet and set a timeline for yourself with how much you want to save each month.

2. Pick up a part-time job

Whether it be driving a night or two for Lyft, an extra job a few hours a week to fund your travel lust can majorly speed up the process of saving.  If you can afford it, save each paycheck from your extra job and deposit it directly into your savings account.

3. Sell your unwanted things online

All of us have an extra iPod, a nice gift from mom that we'll never wear- sell it online.  We have all used eBay and Craigslist, but try Gazelle for your old phones, computers, iPods, and tablets.  They offer free-shipping and pay you via check, PayPal, or Amazon credit.  Not enough room in your closet?  Download the app ThreadFlip, an online marketplace for social-media lovers, to your smartphone.  You can take pictures of clothes and accessories on your phone and directly upload them to the app.  Once your items sell, the company sends you prepaid packaging and labeling.  And voilà, you've made profit on last season's clothes!

4. Setup automatic transfers to your savings account

It may be difficult remembering to set aside the money you've been saving up each month.  Setting up automatic monthly transfers into your savings account by going onto your bank's website can easily solve this problem.  You'll be saving money without even needing to remember.

5. Give something up

Can you limit your eating out to once or twice a week by preparing meals at the beginning of the week?  Or replace your gym membership with running outdoors or a home workout video?  Or cut down on your morning coffee shop run to only twice a week?  Simple things like this could save you a few hundred dollars a month.

Now that you've got the knowledge, put it to use and go see the world!
