Product Description

Handmade by its namesake in the Namatala slum of Uganda, this 3-tiered necklace is made of red, paper beads with a brass hook closure. Helps support small business development for Martha and her family.

  • Longest strand measures 12''

The goal of our Ugandan vendor is to empower, voice, and educate so that women living in poverty can be independent, successful business owners and able to provide for their families. 1000 Shillings became the name of the company based on the amount of money that the average woman lives on per day – approximately 1,000 Ugandan Shillings, which equates to just $.40. Created by six female artisans in the Namatala slum of Mbale, Uganda, the purchase of every necklace goes directly to helping these women start their own small businesses in a variety of fields with seed capital. The ultimate goal is to empower them to stand alone as small business owners, translating to sustainable growth and self-sufficiency.

A portion of proceeds from this item is dedicated to Water For People, working to build a world where all people have access to safe drinking water and sanitation, and where no one suffers or dies from a water- or sanitation-related disease.
